New Financial Incentive for Petrol Motorcycles
20 MAY 2025:Transport Malta, together with the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure, and Public Works, has relaunched a financial incentive for anyone buying a new petrol-powered motorcycle.
If you register a new petrol motorcycle from 1st April 2025, you may be eligible for this grant which can also be combined with the scrappage scheme if youre getting rid of an old vehicle.
This initiative aims to encourage more people to switch from cars to motorcycles, especially for short trips and during busy traffic times.
The Authority believes that this is another step towards reducing congestion and helping the environment.
Applications for these grants are now open to all eligible vehicle owners and can be obtained from Transport Malta offices or online through the Transport Malta website.
Interested applicants may obtain the application form through any of the following methods:

Collect it in person from the Transport Malta offices located in Paola, Lija or Victoria, Gozo.

Completed application forms must be submitted to the Transport Malta offices in Paola, Lija or Victoria Gozo from Monday to Friday from 07:30hrs till 13:00hrs.

Applicants are entitled to one (1) grant each, and applicants who received a grant for a petrol motorcycle between 2021 and 2024 are not eligible under a grant under this scheme.
The grant amounts to be paid for each used electric vehicle in category M1 and N1 purchased, subject to eligibility criteria stipulated in the scheme document, are listed below:
The scrappage grant is subject to the following eligibility criteria:
- Scrapped vehicle must be at least 10 years old from the Year of Manufacture on the date of destruction.
- The Scrapped vehicle must be licensed with Transport Malta in the name of the applicant before its destruction and before the registration of the new electric vehicle or, in the case of pedelecs, before the date of purchase.
- Deregistered vehicles which had benefitted from the provisions of S.L.65.24 shall not be eligible for this scrappage scheme.
- Vehicles must be scrapped at Authorised Treatment Facilities approved in compliance with the Waste Management (End of Life) Regulations S.L.549.36. Destruction Certificates must be dated 2025.
- If the scrapped car was continuously registered in Gozo between the 11th of October 2021 and the date of scrappage, and the bank account to which the applicant requests the issue of the grant is registered on an address in Gozo, applicant shall be entitled for an additional scrappage grant of 1,000.
Moreover, Transport Malta draws the attention of potential applicants to the following important conditions:
- There are ONLY 10 destruction facilities authorised to destroy cars in line with the end-of-life directive. The list of approved facilities is available on TMs website and the scrapping form VEH 13.
- It is illegal to garage and/or sell a vehicle for parts. Vehicle owners must dispose of their vehicles at authorised destruction facilities ONLY. Only these are certified to issue destruction certificates.
- After this process, the vehicle owner must visit Transport Malta and present the number plates, destruction certificate, and registration certificate (logbook) to have the vehicle officially scrapped and deregistered with TM.
- If an applicant intends to avail from the scrapping scheme it is of outmost importance that the vehicle must be in the name of the applicant before the vehicle is taken to the destruction facility and before the new electric vehicle is registered. It is illegal to purchase a vehicle which has already been destructed at the facility and try to transfer it on your name with the Authority. A vehicle CANNOT be transferred once it is scrapped with the Authority
