Trackless Train Transport Services

Trackless Train Routes can be operated by holders of a valid Carriage of Passengers Operator’s Licence issued by Transport Malta.

A trackless train route is a route established and published by Transport Malta and which may be used to provide regular passenger transport services by operators authorised to operate trackless trains. There are currently three trackless train routes that have been established and published by Transport Malta: one in Rabat, one in St Paul’s Bay and the one in Rabat/Xaghra Gozo. The operation of all these routes has been awarded by Transport Malta to transport operators for a defined concession period after a public call for interest.

Transport Malta may in future consider establishing and publishing more trackless train routes in other areas in Malta and in Gozo. The operation of such routes would be awarded to transport operators following a public call for interest.

Special Trackless Train Services:

The Authority may also grant operators of trackless trains a temporary licence to operate special trackless train services at the request of a Local Council and subject to certain conditions stipulated in regulation 680 (6) of the Passenger Transport Services Regulations (S.L. 499.56)
