VRT Station Licence

A licence to operate and manage a VRT Station is issued by Transport Malta in terms of the Motor Vehicle (Roadworthiness Test) Regulations (S.L. 65.15). Such a licence authorises the operator to test vehicles for their roadworthiness in accordance with the prescribed requirements and to certify vehicles as roadworthy and safe to be used on public roads.

This is a list of VRT Stations that are authorised to operate in Malta and in Gozo.

The following are the requirements to become a licensed VRT Station Operator:
• The applicant must be of good repute and conduct;
• The applicant must have appropriate financial standing;
• The applicant must be in possession of the necessary testing equipment and the appropriate premises which are classified as Class 5B – General Industry of the Use Classes Order (S.L.552.15)

Application Process:

Application form VRT 01 needs to be submitted to Transport Malta at the Technical Unit located at A3 Towers Triq l-Arkati, Paola.


Together with the completed application, the applicant must also submit:


- a copy of his/her ID card;
- a Police Conduct Certificate;
- an area site plan;
- internal set up of the premises;
- evidence of appropriate financial standing.


An acknowledgment will be sent to the applicant by Transport Malta. In the case of an incomplete application, the applicant will be informed upon receipt of the application about any additional documentation or information required.

Upon submission of a complete application, the applicant will be informed accordingly and an onsite inspection will be carried out by Transport Malta officials, following which, Transport Malta will inform the applicant by notice in writing of its decision on the application. In the case of refusal of an application, the application will be informed with the reasons for such refusal.

Validity of an Authorisation:


The validity of a licence to operate a VRT Station is subject to the continued compliance with the requirements of the regulations and to an annual Licence fee of €582 for each test lane. The licensed Operator is also required to provide the Authority with calibration certificates of the testing equipment on an annual basis.
