Pilotage Procedure
Pilotage is compulsory for all vessels 500 GT and over calling at Maltese ports, unless exempted under the Maritime Pilotage Regulations S.L.499.26 as amended.
The compulsory pilotage ports are those listed in the Ports and Shipping Act (Cap. 352 of the Laws of Malta).
Pilotage services are provided by the Malta Maritime Pilots Co-operative Ltd, being the service provider in terms of the Regulations, and include the boarding of vessels at the various Pilot Stations located outside Valletta and Marsaxlokk. In bad weather, subject that specific conditions are met, boarding may be permitted at the port entrance.
