Works on the 7.3 km long Triq il-Kosta began in April of 2014. At a cost of €53 million, the project which is partially being funded by the EU, involves the widening of carriageways and the realignment of the bends. Once complete, it will include, for most of the road, 2 carriageways incorporating 2 lanes each, a continuous central crash barrier, footpaths and cycle lanes.
The project is intended to increase and improve accessibility to agricultural holdings for farmers, which includes the upgrading of existing farm access roads and passageways. Hence a number of agricultural roads and passageways have been identified and prioritised for the upgrading and resurfacing of existing farm access roads and passageways serving these agricultural holdings located in rural areas.
The project intends to carry out an investigation of each road through visual inspection and hence the establishment of the proposed way forward in terms of resurfacing of the existing access. This action will facilitate the adaptation of agriculture through the improvement of the access infrastructure, thus increasing and better management of farm utilisation and efficiency. This should aid in reducing limited accessibility to such holdings.
The interventions planned mainly include the selection and prioritisation of a considerable number of rural roads which as mentioned provide access to agricultural holdings. The works will hence mainly include levelling of the existing surface, and resurfacing either through flexible asphaltic concrete or rigid reinforced concrete slab, similar to existing.
