Transport Malta is the authority that regulates and promotes the use of water transport which includes ferries and water taxis as an alternativee, cost-effective and environment friendly mode of passenger transportation.
The objectives of waterborne transport are to reduce road transport and associated pollution and therefore contributes to the safeguarding of our environment.

Regulation (EU) No.1177/2010 concerning the rights of passengers when travelling by sea and inland waterways.
Regulation (EU) No 1177/2010 concerning the righs of passengers when travelling by sea and inland waterway becomes applicable on 18 December 2012.
It provides for a minimum set of rights for passengers travelling
The Regulation does however, not apply to certain categories of waterborne transport services.
