To transfer your vehicle

Photo copy of the ID’s of the 3 parties (not needed if transfer is made on VEH 50)

If licence is due to be renewed before always check whether the vrt is due (www.licenzji-vetturi.gov.mt)

Any contraventions, CVA and any other fees due must be paid before the transfer is effect.
You must come at the Land Transport Directorate in Hall B between 7.30 am and 12.00 pm (Monday to Friday) to effect such transaction.
The buyer and seller together with a witness must sign and fill the back part of the Vehicle Registration Certificate. The buyer must also produce an insurance certificate commencing from the date of transfer and if the road licence is expired a valid VRT has to be submitted. (If Applicable)
The buyer and seller may opt to fill in application form VEH 50 instead of signing on the vehicle registration certificate. In this case, the copies of the Identity cards will not be needed for the transfer of ownership. The application form VEH 50 shall be signed by the seller, buyer and a witness to signatures. The witness to signature will be signing and certifying/confirming that the signatures of both the buyer and seller took place by the buyer and seller respectively in the witness’s presence.
In this regard, Transport Malta makes no warranties, express or implied, as to verification of the identity/signatures of those persons whose name appears on the transfer document. Transport Malta further disclaims any liability whatsoever for loss, damage, or injury to transfer or /transferee or any third parties as a result of any defect in identity /signature on the transfer document.
(The usual procedure to effect a transfer of ownership on the vehicle registration certificate will continue to be effective for those persons who sign on the vehicle registration certificate and submit the copies of the Identity Cards of the seller, purchaser and witness.)
If the vehicle is co-owned by the husband and wife, then both signatures are required. The spouse must also produce a copy of the Identity Card (if application form VEH 50 is filled in, there will be no need of the copy of the Identity Card)
If the seller or buyer happen to be a Limited Liability Company, a declaration signed by the company secretary will be required. This declaration must state the date when the board resolution was taken and confirm that the directors find no objection to the transfer of the vehicle. The declaration must also confirm the name of the person who will sign for the said transfer. The Board of Directors can authorize either any Director or representative to call personally with his/her I.D Card. If the application form VEH 50 is filled in, these documents will not be required to be presented.
TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP WITH A LOST/STOLEN REGISTRATION CERTIFICATE
If your Vehicle Registration Certificate is lost or stolen then the transfer must be affected on the Transfer Form (Click Here for VEH 50). The seller will be requested to make a declaration regarding the loss of the Registration Certificate.
An administration fee of €8.00 for the declaration and an administration fee of €10.00 for the new Registration Certificate will be charged.
VEHICLES WITH A RE-SALE STATUS
A vehicle registered on an authorised dealer (re-sale) is deemed to be a garaged vehicle. In this regard, a garaged vehicle does not have any licence fees due and hence, the VERA Computerised System will not charge any licence fee during a de-resale.
