Taxis and Electric Mini Cabs may be driven only by holders of a driver’s tag which isissued by the Driver & Vehicles Licensing Unit of Transport Malta to applicants whosatisfy the following requirements:

Is in possession of a category B driving license;

*Is in possession of a Taxi Driver and Area Knowledge Certificate (TDAKC);
-
Has spent 40 hours riding in a taxi with a licensed taxi driver, including a minimum of 10 hours during the night (between 20:00 and 06:00);

*Is medically fit;
-
*Is of good repute and conduct.

In order to obtain this certificate, an applicant needs to:

Attend a 46 hour long training for taxi drivers at any of the following approved training institutions:

Pass a theory test that shall be done at the Driver Theory Test Centre in Gwardamangia. This test consists of 35 multiple choice questions that need to be answered within 45 minutes. The pass mark is set at 85%;

Pass a practical test of 45 minutes duration that shall be done at the Driver Training and Testing Centre in Floriana. During this 45 minute long test the applicant shall be required to drive a vehicle to a tourist at an undisclosedcommercial zone in Malta.
Uponsuccessful completion of the aboveprocess, the applicant shall be issued with the certificate. Driver will then be required to attend a refresher training every 5 years.
*Medical Fitness
Applicant shall present a medical certificate proving fitness for long term driving.
*Good repute and conduct
In order to satisfy the condition of good repute and conduct, an applicant shall authorize Transport Malta to obtain his/herCriminal Record from the Police. For this type of tag, a person shall not be deemed to be of good repute if that person has been:
1. found guilty of committing any crime contemplated in Title I of Part II of Book First of the Criminal Code or articles 198, 199, 203, 203A, 204, 204A, 204B, 204C, 205, 211, 212, 213, 217, 218, 220, 238(a), 245, 248B, 248C, 248D of the Criminal Code;
2. sentenced in the last ten years, to imprisonment, for a term or terms, of or exceeding, in the aggregate, for one month or to a fine or fines which in the aggregate amount to at least four thousand euro (€4,000) for committing one or more crimes connected with violence, or was serving such a sentence or part thereof within such ten-year period;
3. sentenced, in the last five years to imprisonment, for whatever term, or to a fine or fines which in the aggregate amount to at least one thousand euro (€1,000), for committing a crime or crimes in terms of the Traffic Regulation Ordinance or a crime or crimes in terms of any regulation made thereunder or a crime or crimes in terms of the Act or a crime or crimes in terms of any regulation made under the Act; or
4. found guilty of committing any corresponding offence under any law of a country or territory outside Malta:
Applicants who are found to satisfy all the above requirements will be issued with:
-
a new driving license on which the information code 107 is printed on the back side close to the category B licence;

a new driver’s tag on which the icon for Taxis is shown.
Such tags are valid for five years, at the end of which period applicant shall be required to attend a refresher training and prove continued compliance with the condition of good repute and conduct.
